Suffian Hakim is a Singaporean Malay penulis (writer) whose paternal ancestors came from Java, while his maternal ancestors hail from Malacca. He looks more Javanese than Malaccan, while his thoughts are more Chewbaccan than Jabbanese. He isn’t that good with the language (his secondary school made him drop Higher Malay; they’d make him drop Malay altogether if they had their way), but his heart and soul recognize the dignity and nobility of his ancestry.
